Shredder for plastic recycling and robot manipulator: KPI students presented their own developments during an internship at Ajax Systems

Ajax Systems, in collaboration with the  National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, has completed the second stage of the internship program in Mechanical Engineering. Educational internships are one of the key areas of the Ajax Next educational initiative. The program aimed to teach students the basics of industrial mechanics by developing mechanized devices that serve as prototypes of production equipment. A total of 17 students took part in the internship, and the best of them joined the Ajax Systems team.

During the five-month internship, the participants developed training prototypes to automate and optimize production processes. The students went through the entire development cycle — from conceptual design, parameter calculations, and modeling to design implementation and programming of the mechanisms’ logic.

Among others, the following devices were developed:

  • Plastic recycling shredder — a device that shreds plastic material and waste from plastic printing.
  • Robot manipulator with a gripper — an element of production line automation in which the trajectories and gripper parameters are programmed to work with various objects, such as packing a battery in a device.
  • Motorized stands — stands with various mechanisms for testing boards.

The students’ demonstration projects were transferred to Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute for further research and training.

The internship was held in cooperation with Ajax Systems mentor engineers and professors from the Faculty of Instrumentation Engineering. These professionals and specialists provided regular feedback throughout the training and helped the participants understand the device development process.

I designed and assembled a four-axis robot manipulator, which was a large-scale project requiring a lot of time and effort. The most difficult part was determining the type of manipulator, the principle of its operation, and selecting materials. All these factors subsequently influenced the design and efficiency. The final stage, namely— writing the executive program,— was the most interesting. When you see that the device works as you intended, it is very motivating. At each stage, Ajax Systems’ mentors helped me understand the technical nuances and find effective solutions. I plan to continue developing within the company and gain new knowledge and experience in real engineering projects.

Oleksandr Yunak,

second-year student, Special Equipment Mechanical Engineer at Ajax Systems
